SAINT-ETIENNE, France -- Saint-Etienne made up ground in the race for a Champions League spot by defeating third-place Lille 2-0 Friday in the French league. Brazilian striker Brandao opened the scoring with a header in the 55th minute before winger Franck Tabanou volleyed home from close range to double the lead in the 61st. Lille was down to 10 men in the 62nd when midfielder Florent Balmont was red-carded for dissent. Saint-Etienne bounced back from a French Cup elimination against fourth-division side Cannes on Tuesday to pull within three points of Lille. "The team that wanted it the most tonight won the match," Saint-Etienne coach Christophe Galtier said. "We showed courage to make things happen. My players were rewarded for their efforts." The hosts struggled to provide some decent service to Brandao in a tactical first half. Lille centre back David Rozehnal cleared dangerous crosses from Saint-Etienne wingers Romain Hamouma in the 27th and Tabanou in the 33rd. The visitors did not create much either but were more threatening from set pieces. Lille defender Simon Kjaer headed a corner over the bar in the third minute before Salomon Kalou connected with a free kick from Balmont in the ninth for a header that Saint-Etienne goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier palmed away. One accurate final ball made the difference in the second half. A cross from Saint-Etienne leftback Faouzi Ghoulam eluded the Lille defence, but Brandao beat the offside trap to head in at the far post. Six minutes later, Tabanou converted a rebound after Lille goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama parried a volley from Hamouma. Balmont spotted a foul from Tabanou in the build-up to the goal and argued with the referee, who sent off the Lille midfielder. "I told him there was a foul and that it was a disgrace," Balmont said. "In the heat of the discussion, I told him he was rubbish. To me, thats not an insult, thats what is frustrating. But he took it as an insult." Saint-Etienne could have added a third goal in the 78th but Tabanou failed to convert from six yards a low cross from Hamouma. Ruffier kept a clean sheet by saving a close-range effort from Lille substitute Ryan Mendes in the 86th. "We played for about an hour and then we faded after conceding that goal," Lille coach Rene Girard said. "We gave up. We will sort out those problems together. Its in the heads. We will have to put a few heads in the fridge. We must get back to things that are more down to earth." LOUIS - When the St. Louis Rams needed it most, kicker Greg Zuerlein regained his rookie-season form.Zuerlein was a career-best 5 for 5 with two field goals of longer than 50 yards last week, providing most of the points in a 22-7 upset over the Denver Broncos and earning NFC special teams player of the week honours. You go out to do what you can to help your team, and thats what Im happiest about, Zuerlein said. I did my job.Zuerlein and Jeff Wilkins (2000) are the only Rams kickers to go 5 for 5 in a game.Chip shot or long distance, Zuerleins approach is the same.A 55-yarder for him is just a normal kick, special teams coach John Fassel said. He doesnt have to add anything to it.When he connects, the mechanics are so sound the kick is likely to clear the goalposts with yardage to spare. Wherever the offence stalled against the Broncos, the Rams were confident of getting points. In pregame warmups he was crushing it, Fassel said. So you just had to make sure he kind of stayed in that groove. He had a kick a quarter, so it kind of kept him going.Zuerlein hasnt missed many throughout his career, but the effort that matched his college best at Division II Missouri Western in 2012 came as a bit of a rebound. In his rookie season, he set a franchise record with seven field goals of at least 50 yards. This season, he has one missed field goal inside the 40 and has mishit a handful of kickoffs, too, one of which resulted in a kickoff return for touchdown in a loss at Arizona two weeks ago.Youre going to miss some, Zuerlein said. Nobodys perfect. But when you do. you have to let it go and try to make sure youre ready for the next kick. One got too much big toe, too little instep. Another was a shank. All the other ones have been really good hits, Fassel said. All his warmmups have been good, all his practices have been great.ddddddddddddThats why Im really happy for him that he had a big day, because it was coming at some point.Coach Jeff Fisher said there was no hesitation calling for the field goal unit against Denver, though a lengthy off-target kick would have put Peyton Manning and the Broncos high-powered offence in good field position. The rationale made sense.Say you punt and you get a touchdown and the balls on the 20, Fisher said. Hes going to be on the 40 in just a few plays, so why not take a shot at the points?Fassel thought Zuerleins 55-yarder would have been good from 66 or 67 yards. The Rams plan accordingly, and let the kicker know when its fourth down.Greg just knows if we get basically across the 50 to be ready, Fassel said. Hes always ready.Zuerleins three field goals accounted for all of the second-half scoring and gave the Rams something to show for Shaun Hills turnover-free game and 100-yard efforts from Kenny Britt and Tre Mason. It was the breathing room they needed to give them victories over both Super Bowl participants from last season.Notes: Fisher said there was a chance DE Chris Long (ankle surgery) could play be activated from the injured reserve-designated for return list Sunday at San Diego. Long is in his second week of practice and must return by next week. Hes getting better each day, Fisher said. ... James Laurinaitis (foot) was a full participant and TE Jared Cook (back) was limited, after both were held out Wednesday. ... G Davin Joseph returned to practice after sitting out Wednesday, essentially a day off for healing. Joseph has sheared off his long flowing dreadlocks, mindful of his approaching 31st birthday.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFLWholesale MLB Orioles JerseysRed Sox Jerseys From ChinaDiscount Yankees Jerseys OnlineRays Jerseys For SaleBlue Jays Jerseys From ChinaWholesale MLB White Sox JerseysIndians Jerseys For SaleTigers Jerseys From ChinaWholesale MLB Astros JerseysCheap Baseball Angels JerseysAthletics Jerseys From ChinaMariners Jerseys For SaleCheap Baseball Rangers JerseysBraves Jerseys For SaleDiscount Marlins Jerseys OnlineDiscount Mets Jerseys OnlinePhillies Jerseys From ChinaWholesale MLB Nationals JerseysCubs Jerseys From ChinaDiscount Reds Jerseys OnlineBrewers Jerseys From ChinaWholesale MLB Pirates JerseysWholesale MLB Cardinals JerseysDiamondbacks Jerseys For SaleRockies Jerseys For SaleDiscount Dodgers Jerseys OnlineDiscount Padres Jerseys OnlineGiants Jerseys For Sale ' ' '
