DETROIT -- Max Scherzer allowed two runs in the first inning -- and by the time he took the mound again, he had a two-run lead. Its been that kind of season for the Detroit right-hander. Scherzer won his 11th straight decision to start the year and Victor Martinez hit a first-inning grand slam to lead the Tigers to a 10-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night. Scherzer was terrific after that shaky beginning, and as usual his teammates gave him plenty of run support. "Its nice to start a season 11-0. It just means were playing great team baseball and Im going out there and doing my job," Scherzer said. "Im credited a ton of run support. Thats when youve got to give all the credit to your teammates. Every time I feel like I go deep into a game, theyre going to pick me up. They have the whole entire season." Scherzer allowed a couple runs in the first, including a towering solo homer by David Ortiz, but Martinezs drive put the Tigers ahead to stay. Martinez also hit an RBI double in the fifth, and Scherzer shut down Boston after the first. He allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings. Allen Webster (0-2) gave up five runs and eight hits in 4 1-3 innings. He struck out five and walked two. "The four runs given back in the first set the tone for the entire evening," Boston manager John Farrell said. "I think he settled down after the first inning and pitched OK." Red Sox reliever Franklin Morales yielded four runs, including a two-run homer by Omar Infante. Farrell said Morales could go on the disabled list because of left shoulder discomfort. Scherzer became the first pitcher to start 11-0 since Roger Clemens in 1997, according to STATS. The last to start 12-0 also was Clemens, during a 14-0 stretch to begin his AL MVP season in 1986. "I realize that it takes so many other teammates to put me in that position," Scherzer said. "This is a credit to the Detroit Tigers, for me being in this position. I know Ive pitched well, and I know Ive given my team a chance to win, but it doesnt always go that way." The first two hitters singled off Scherzer, and Dustin Pedroias double-play grounder gave Boston a 1-0 lead. Ortizs 16th homer put the Red Sox up by two. Detroit erased that deficit in a hurry. After singles by Austin Jackson and Torii Hunter, Miguel Cabrera drew a walk. Prince Fielder struck out, but Martinezs line drive cleared the wall in right for his third career slam. "Its big, when you give an answer like that," Martinez said. "Its always big to come right back, especially with Max on the mound. Everybody knows how well hes been throwing the ball." Scherzer allowed only two hits in the next four innings. In the fourth, Mike Carps tapper went for an infield hit, and he went to third on the play when Scherzer threw wildly to first for an error. Carp was stranded after Daniel Navas flyout. Jose Iglesias appeared to have a double in the fifth, but he stumbled past second base while beating Hunters throw from right field and was tagged out. Ortiz hit a drive in the sixth that Jackson ran down in deep left-centre. Scherzer struck out his final batter in the seventh -- Jarrod Saltalamacchia -- for his sixth strikeout. Hes reached that mark in all 15 starts this year. Scherzer lowered his ERA to 3.05. Hes received 7.84 runs of support per nine innings, the most in baseball. The Tigers kept right on scoring Saturday. Andy Dirks singled, stole second and came home on Jacksons single in the fourth. Webster was lifted with nobody on in the fifth, and Morales allowed a walk to Fielder, a run-scoring double by Martinez and an RBI single by Jhonny Peralta. Infantes homer in the seventh made it 9-2. Fielder hit into a bases-loaded double play in the eighth, bringing another run home. Saltalamacchia hit an RBI single in the ninth. NOTES: Jackson, Hunter and Dirks each had three hits. ... Ortizs 18 homers at Comerica Park are the most there by a visiting player, according to STATS. ... For a second straight night, Shane Victorino tried to throw out Cabrera at first base from right field on what looked like a clean single. Cabrera has beaten the throw both times. Victorino also tried it on a hard single by Hunter and nearly got him. In the ninth, Hunter charged Ortizs single as if he wanted to try to throw to first, but Fielder wasnt covering the bag. ... It is a cliché dragged out by fans and pundits regularly when discussions take place around which teams are better than others.Lewis Hamilton was delighted to recover from a poor getaway at the season-opening Australian GP to claim a second-placed finish in Melbourne. The three-time world champion started the race on pole but made contact with Nico Rosberg at Turn One, eventually fighting back from as low as seventh to reach the podium behind his Mercedes team-mate.Hamilton endured several battles with Toro Rosso pair Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz but the decision from his team to keep him on the medium tyres for 39 laps after the red flag paid off, with the 31-year-old holding off Ferraris Sebastian Vettel in the closing stages. Asked if he was frustrated or disappointed with not sealing victory and ending Rosbergs streak of wins, Hamilton told Sky Sports F1: Neither of those. I came back from quite far behind so I feel that I achieved quite a lot today so Im really happy I did damage limitation, the team did a great job. Whats difficult is knowing how long those tyres are going to go. I didnt think the tyres were going to last but then they had that drop and Sebastian was on my tail. After that it was so slippery. We thought Ferrari were going to be close. I knew they would be quicker in qualifying if they had another lap. Nico doesnt seem to think he had problems following them, so thats interesting. When Sebastian was following me I was excited because I was in a race. But unfortunately this track doesnt let you have serious battles. Australian GP report Nico Rosberg claims victory in Melbourne Hamilton got away slowly at the front of the grid and, as Rosberg as well as both Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen passed him, he clipped his team-mates rear left tyre and lost ground on his rivals.Australian GP driver ratingsJudging by their past it could have resulted in another meltdown but both drivers were pictured hugging at the end of the race while Rosberg apologised for making contact at the first corner, insisting he didnt know Hamilton was there. Speaking about the poor start and whether it was because of the new clutch regulations, Hamilton added: As far as Im aware it wasnt because of that.ddddddddddddWhen we had the stoppage I asked my engineer and I think we just had no wheels spinning. It was one of those difficult starts. The actual start wasnt shocking, it was just Turn One when Nico ran me off where I lost the most ground. Im just grateful I was able to recover.
